Mysore Style
Ashtanga Yoga is traditionally taught in a ‘Mysore style’ setting. The room is mostly silent except for the sound of breathing. Students of all levels, from beginners to more advanced, practise together and are taught individually, one on one, within this group setting. This allows students to progress at a pace that is suited to their own capabilities. Students learn and memorise, step by step, a set sequence of postures that are practised six days a week, taking rest on new and full moon days. It is also recommended that ladies rest for a few days during their monthly cycle. New postures are gradually added to the student’s practice when they are ready. The teacher typically uses verbal cues and hands-on adjustments to assist the students.
